In an animation , effects are used to add visual interest to a scene rain , fire , smoke , and other natural effects are difficult to create using traditional surfaces and shaders, effects tools such as opti-fx, particles, and paint effects can be used to add these and other elements to a scene,

Opti-fx are basically lights that have glows and fog. They make it possible to add atmospheric effects to lights that can enhance a scene particles are points in space that can be simulated using forces and dynamic expressions.
The resulting motion can be quite complex and is great for creating natural effects such as smoke and steam.
Paint effects uses a brush-based paradigm that lets 3D artists add brush storks to their scenes that then render using hundreds of attributes.
